Leave a little room for the unexpected

A good road trip has a destination. A great one has room to change it. The café with a handwritten sign, the viewpoint a local recommends, the extra night in a town you meant to pass through — these are often the parts you remember.

Before you leave, sketch a route with a few places you genuinely want to see. Then leave the spaces between them open. We like to plan no more than three hours of driving on a day that also includes sightseeing.

The Pacific Coast, California

Start with the ocean on one side and a loose plan on the other. The California coast rewards slower travel, early starts, and the occasional detour inland. A convertible can make a mild day feel special; a comfortable sedan is just as good when the marine layer rolls in.

Check road closures before departure and again each morning. Coastal routes can change after storms, and your navigation app may not tell the whole story.

Miami to the Florida Keys

The journey south from Miami becomes its own attraction as the road begins to meet the water. Pack light, keep water within reach, and give yourself time for stops rather than treating the route as a race to Key West.

An early pickup helps you leave the city before the busiest traffic. Photograph your rental at handover, check the fuel policy, and set navigation before setting off.

A Mediterranean coastal escape

The best Mediterranean drives balance the coast with the quieter roads just inland. Smaller cars are often easier to park in historic towns, while automatic transmission can make unfamiliar roads feel more relaxed.

Choose accommodation with confirmed parking. A beautiful old-town address can involve restricted traffic zones or a long walk from the nearest public garage.

The car is part of the plan

Choose enough luggage space for your real bags, not the bags you wish you were packing. Add a second driver for longer routes, and check cross-border permissions before including another country.

Most of all, choose a pace that makes the journey feel like time off. The scenic route works best when you have time to enjoy it.
